Education chiefs have released the projected numbers for each of the island’s schools next year.

The figures reveal that numbers are set to go up, normally by a small amount, in just over half of the primary schools, but to drop in four of the five secondary schools.

Last week’s Examiner highlighted that many schools were under-subscribed

There are some schools whose pupil numbers will exceed the permanent capacity benchmark.

The only secondary school to have a projected increase is Ballakermeen High School in Douglas.

Its numbers are due to go from 1,500 on the current roll to 1,558 for the 2017-18 academic year. Its permanent capacity figure is 1,370.

Several primary schools are set to exceed their permanent capacity figure, including, Peel Clothworkers’; Scoill yn Jubilee, Douglas; Cronk-y-Berry, Douglas; St Mary’s RC, Douglas, St Thomas’ CE, Douglas; Willaston and Arbory.

The figures were released at the request of Daphne Caine (Garff), following up on her House of Keys query on catchment areas for schools.

Mrs Caine previously asked whether catchment reviews were an option for under-capacity schools, but Education Minister Graham Cregeen sounded a note of caution, saying that could in itself cause problems, with parents wanting to go to a particular school at the expense of another.
