An island school has been recognised for its innovative practice by House of Lords members.
Bunscoill Rhumsaa in Ramsey is the first island school to feature in The Parliamentary Review - a guide to industry best practice - after it was chosen by a team of researchers looking for schools with an interesting story to tell.
About 10 to 12 schools in each geographical area of the British Isles feature in this year’s ’Best Practice Representative’, with the island being in the north west.
Schools submit an article on how they’ve developed and changed within the last few years. The review is chaired by Lord Eric Pickles and Lord David Blunkett.
In its article, Bunscoill Rhumsaa explained how it was created by the infant and junior schools in Ramsey combining and moving into new facilities. It is the largest primary school in the island with 510 pupils.
Details are given about its six curriculum keystones: wellbeing; heritage; global awareness; creativity; enquiry and opportunity.
Head teacher David Jenkins said: ’We were really pleased to be invited to feature in this year’s Parliamentary Review.
’It’s a great opportunity to share not only some of the terrific things that are going on at Bunscoill Rhumsaa, but also to talk about the Isle of Man’s own approach to education and some of the real benefits it brings.’
Lord Pickles and Lord Blunkett commented on the article, writing: ’The ability to listen and learn from one another has always been vital in parliament, in business and in most aspects of daily life. But at this particular moment in time, as national and global events continue to reiterate, it is uncommonly crucial that we forge new channels of communication and reinforce existing ones.
’The following article from Bunscoill Rhumsaa Primary School is an attempt to do just that.’
