Sixth-form students from around the island debated a resolution on North Korea during a model UN Security Council at Castle Rushen High School.
Friday’s event, which was organised by the United Nations Association, encouraged students to discuss the further use of sanctions against North Korea due to continued weapons testing.
School represented 15 countries: Ballakermeen High School with France and Ukraine; Castle Rushen High School with South Korea, Kazakhstan and Senegal; King William’s College with USA, Uruguay and Italy; Queen Elizabeth II High School with China and Egypt; Ramsey Grammar High School with the Russian Federation and Bolivia; St Ninian’s High School with Japan, Sweden and Ethiopia.
Nations were represented by an ambassador and a counsellor from each school.
President of Tynwald Steve Rodan took on the role of president of the council and represented the UK.
Teams gave an opening address to the council and then bi-lateral negotiations with other member states.
Topics discussed looked at the impact on the North Korean government and its citizens, with particular concerns on contrabands, such as fuel, and not allowing residents to secure work in their country. They agreed to ’condemn in the strongest terms the continued nuclear testing’.
And they resolved to stop selling and exporting fuel to North Korea and demanded all member states to freeze any known assets of leader Kim Jong Un.
Amber Young and Alex Moyer, from St Ninian’s, won the prize for best representation of a country, Ethiopia. The individual winner was RGS student Isaac Jagus, for his role as Russian ambassador.
