Two musicians will be enjoying a summer residential school in the British Isles thanks to a bursary.

Marcus Tyrer and Feena Cashen Wilson are the recipients of the Roz Kelly Music Bursary 2020, an annual award by the Friends of the Manx Youth Orchestra.

It is awarded to young musicians who have already shown significant musical promise and who would benefit from participation in a summer residential school in the British Isles.

Castle Rushen High School student Marcus has used the bursary to apply for a course at Harrogate Saxphone School.

The 18-year-old said: ’I am delighted that the panel has chosen me to receive the bursary.’

He hopes it will increase his confidence in ensemble and solo playing, and ultimately create opportunities for him to play at professional level.

Feena, aged 16, plans to use the bursary to enable her attendance at the Chethams School Piano Junior Academy, in Manchester.

The Ballakermeen High School student said she is looking forward to the challenge of learning more of the musical theory, audition skills and piano technique offered by this programme.

She hopes to teach music and/or piano in the future.

Roz Kelly enjoyed singing and playing the piano and often participated in the Guild.

She joined the Manx Youth Orchestra in 1981 and continued to enjoy music making as a student at Liverpool University. She sang with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and the Liverpool Chamber Choir.

Roz was keen that others would have the opportunity to participate in music, and wanted to be able to further that through her generous and thoughtful bequest.

Unsuccessful applicants from this year are encouraged to reapply next year along with new applicants.

The age range to apply for the bursary is musicians aged 16 to 21.

The deadline for applications for next year’s bursary is February 22, 2021.
