Dare to be scared by taking a ride on the Great Laxey Mine Railway ‘s Hop tu Naa Ghost Train.
A team of volunteers have been working hard to transform the railway to provide a thrilling experience for families.
Returning visitors to the Hop tu Naa Ghost Trains will recognise lots of the old favourites, including the hulking figure of Frankenstein who greets people on arrival.
But plenty of surprises are in store as the volunteers have also been working on lots of new effects.
The railway’s director, volunteer Ian Smith told Island Life: ‘It takes the volunteers four weekends to get the event set up, starting immediately after the end of the regular season.
‘It is our biggest fund raising event. Each running day is a 12-hour shift for the volunteers.’
The Great Laxey Mine Railway Hop tu Naa Ghost Trains have been running since 2005, making it one of the longest running Hop tu Naa special events in the island. The tunnel this year features a newly created disco, ‘The Crypt’, with DJ Doom.
Its main feature is a disco ball covered in some 14,000 mini mirror tiles.
This feature alone took two volunteers 22 hours to complete
The railway has its own special effects team, known as ‘The Skeleton Crew’, who build and maintain most of the special effects.
‘This year we have bought and upgraded an impressive Hop tu Naa Ghost Tree which will be interactive and particularly impressive,’ Ian said.
The Zombie Village at the far end of the line will be making its return.
‘All the ghosts and ghoulies are already on their way,’ Ian warned.
The Hop tu Naa Ghost Trains will run on Sunday, October 23, Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30 from 1pm to 7pm.
Tickets cost £3 return (if you make it back!) or £10 for a family ticket (two adults and up to three children).
There is no booking - just turn up and pay to be scared!
Ian dared people to come along, saying it’s ‘the cheapest thrill in town!’.
