Slapstick fun, attempts at flight and a whole (tin bath) load of splashing will be seen in Castletown Harbour on Saturday as the annual World Tin Bath Championships makes a return for its 47th year.

Some 232 competitors are entered across all events including the men and women’s races and the six-person team snake race.

The women’s competition will see the current champion, Erika Cowen, attempt to defend her title for the 20th time.

Dave Watt, reigning men’s champion, will also be back to defend his title alongside his family who will compete in the men’s team competition as the ’KillerWatts.’

Other notable entries include ’The Social Network’ and the three ’Coole Girl Egg’ teams.

Also taking place will be the Manx National Snake Race Championship which will be hotly contested by 24 teams including the ’Bonnie Bonnag Bakers’ and ’Team Peaches’.

Saturday will also continue the human powered flying attempt competition where many endeavours are made to achieve flight by any human means necessary.

This sees the best attempt collect a £250 prize for a charity of their choice.

All proceedings will be compèred by Phil Taubman.

The group behind the event, the Castletown Ale Drinkers’ Society, returned to DJ Chris Evans’ Carfest North festival in July to provide guidance for new tin bath racers.

Dave Collister, one of the organisers, promised that the competition will only be cancelled in the case of ’absolutely horrendous’ weather.

Port St Mary Lifeboat will be present to help any competitors that may need rescuing.

Although entries have officially closed, anyone who wishes to enter with their own tin bath should contact the event organisers.

Castletown band will play from 2pm with the racing starting at 3pm. All proceeds will go to local charities.
