A farmers’ market is to be held in the heart of Douglas on Saturday, July 1.

It will mark 10 years since the first farmers’ market, an intiative supported by the government.

That was held in the Villa Marina colonnades and next month’s market will be in the same place.

The idea behind the market is to offer farmers and producers a chance to diversify their businesses and to promote the variety, quality, availability and traceability of Manx produce.

Sheila Gawne, the chairman of Isle of Man Farmers’ Markets, said: ’No one at the time foresaw just how popular these markets would become, and how they would play such an integral part within both the local economy and community, or how they would play such a large role in making food "trendy" again.

’Over the years a number of producers have joined the farmers’ markets, some are still with us today, some have seen their businesses grow beyond expectation, some have left due to other commitments, but the Isle of Man Farmers’ Markets committee would like to extend this invitation to all past, present and prospective future producers, to join us, either to trade with us or just to come and join in our special celebrations.’
