Iconic Manx buildings and areas of architectural interest will be celebrated and highlighted during a four-day programme organised by the Isle of Man Society of Architects.

The festival will see four different events designed to celebrate the island’s diverse collection of buildings.

The highlight will be a concert, held in the historic Our Lady Star of the Sea church, in Ramsey, on Friday, October 12, from 7.30pm.

Appearing on the night will be three top musicians, Ruth Keggin, Malcolm Stitt and Mera Royle.

Organiser Martyn Thomas said that the concert is a great way to highlight a special and iconic building.

’The building is an architectural gem hidden in plain sight, an early church design by the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott,’ said Martyn.

’You may be familiar with others of his work: Liverpool Cathedral, Battersea and Bankside Power Stations, as well as the classic K6 red telephone box.

’We are very excited to be able to present these three amazing musicians in such an excellent space.

’I met Ruth at the church so that she could check the acoustics and the sound was just simply incredible.

’I am still tingling! It really is going to be an excellent concert.’

The programme of events begin with a ’Pechakucha session at Noa Bakehouse, on Tuesday, October 9, from 7pm, which will see heritage and architecture experts give short presentations, followed on Wednesday evening, from 7pm, by a special night of urban sketching, hosted by the Isle of Man Drawing club and held at the Villa Arcade.

Thursday will see a screening of the film ’Russian Ark’, at the Bath and Bottle, from 7pm.

’The events are intended to be accessible to anyone with an interest in Manx culture and heritage and in architecture,’ said Martyn.

’The aim is to encourage the general public to notice and appreciate the buildings that surround them by holding events that engage with the structures and spaces in new ways.’
