Firefighters from Douglas were called to a kitchen fire in the capital today.

On arrival at the property in Port E Chee Avenue, crews were met by the occupants of the house who advised that a toaster in the kitchen had caught fire.

Officers wearing breathing apparatus went into the smoke-filled property and used thermal imaging equipment to quickly locate the fire which was then extinguished using a carbon dioxide extinguisher.

Heat and fire damage was confined to the toaster and the immediate surrounding area. A positive pressure fan was used to remove smoke from the property.

The alert was at 11.30am today (Sunday).

Station officer Brian Quirk later issued the following safety advice to householders:

Never leave appliances unattended.

Ensure appliances are correctly positioned, well away from overhead cupboards and other combustible materials such as curtains or tea towels.

Ensure your home has working smoke alarms which are tested weekly.
