Some 122 homes in lower Laxey could be protected from future flooding under plans unveiled this week.

More than 50 potential options to reduce the risk of flooding have now been identified.

The plans were drawn up by Manx Utilities, with contributions from the Department of Infrastructure and specialist engineering consultants JBA.

It is estimated that £10m will be spent on the works over two years.

Manx Utilities said this will be a complete approach covering the whole of the Laxey catchment including river, tidal and surface water.

It is predicted that tidal flood levels will rise by 0.84m due to climate change and if nothing is done by the year 2119, tidal flooding will occur every year.

The breached river wall on Glen Road has been reconstructed and work on other improved flood defences is already under way, such as a debris catcher at the Glen Roy and new culvert at Gretch Veg.

Proposals included a new retaining wall between the river and Glen Road and a new harbour wall.

New linear walls and earth embankment will protect homes on Glen Road and the Shore Hotel divert flows on the right bank back into the river channel.

Other defences, like new wing walls on Baldhoon Road which will better channel water into existing culverts, have already been completed.

Manx Utilities stress that these are options for discussion only, and nothing final has been decided.

A spokesman said: ’The voice of the village remains the next important step in taking forward protection for Laxey in relation to flood alleviation work.’

The flood alleviation plans are on display to the public today (Tuesday) at Laxey Working Men’s institute from 10am to 8pm.
