Great fun and an important event for the community: that was the organisers’ verdict on the 77th annual Peel Gardeners’ Association show.
Held at Peel Clothworkers’ School, the show featured categories for an eclectic range of entries, from ’Best novice veg and flowers by a Lady - or a Child under 12’, to ’Curved, Large or Medium chrysanthemums’, fruit, and honey (light, medium or dark).
There was £10 up for grabs for the winner of the Association Plaque for best collection of vegetables, while other lucky winners scooped prizes ranging from £5 to 50 pence.
In the garden competition, supported by Peel Commissioners, there were categories for large and small private gardens, Commissioners’ estates, window boxes and hanging baskets, not to mention community displays and allotments.
Handicrafts and baking also had a look in with cups or prizes for knitting, patchwork or cross-stitch, cakes, confectionery and preserves.
Association chairman, Bert Quayle, thanked everyone for supporting the event and also made a plea for more members.

’We’d love to have some younger people on the committee,’ he said.
Club secretary, Margaret Kennaugh, said: ’The big school hall was well filled. We were all very pleased.’
Prizes were presented by Audrey Quirk and the prize for Best in Show went to Dorothy Faragher’s vegetables.
