The Peel Soapbox Derby took place on Sunday with lots of weird and wonderful vehicles and some speedy times clocked up.
It’s quite a strange sight to see the Ruby Clary lifeboat, the John Player Special Formula One car and two ’motorbikes’ joined together, rolling down the streets of Peel. These were just some of the soapbox representations taking part in this year’s Peel Soapbox Derby.
Although postponed because of bad weather it still attracted more than 20 entries.
The start point for the race was the top of Derby Drive and the route then took competitors down Stanley Road and onwards to a flying finish on the promenade, with a few bumps and jumps along the way.
The solo class winner was Danny Ennett in a whirlwind time of just 81.83 seconds, followed by Jamie Teare on 82.23. Jamie’s soapbox also clocked the fastest speed of the day at 30mph.
The team event was won by Kirsty Russell and Gavin Wilby on their twinned motorbike soapboxes in a time of 92.86.
Two ’lifeboats’ were joint winners of the novelty soapbox award: Peel and Ramsey.
Organiser Ian Davison said: ’We want to thank the sponsors; the Commissioners’ men who worked tirelessly to build the course, all the competitors, marshals and time keepers, and everyone else who helped on the day.
