A football tournament held in memory of a young man who died in tragic circumstances in 2010 is to take place next month.

This annual event is named after Jamie Haslett.

Mr Haslett, a student who came from Laxey, was knocked down and killed by a police constable in Sheffield.

The Haslett family continues to work closely with Victim Support to organise the mixed five-a-side football tournament.

The event will be held at Laxey AFC between midday and 6pm on Sunday, August 15.

Kerry Gascoyne, fundraiser for Victim Support, said: ’This event is known to be a fun and exciting day out, although there are rules the most important part is for everyone to enjoy themselves.

’In 2020 the tournament was won by the "Laxey Miners" and raised £1,438 for Victim Support Isle of Man. We hope to raise a similar amount again this year with support from our proud sponsor Hansard.’

Organisers are asking for teams to register in advance. For more information and to register a team contact [email protected] or 01624 679950.

Victim Support is an independent Isle of Man charity, which offers free and confidential help to victims and witnesses of crime, their family and friends.

The past 18 months have been challenging for the charity which continues to see a rise in referrals and contacts following the three Covid19 lockdowns.
