Manx National Heritage is giving free access to its digital newspaper collections in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

iMuseum Newspapers and Publications provides digital access to the most complete run of Isle of Man newspapers from 1792 to 1960, along with additional publications relevant to the heritage of the island.

The original newspapers and publications are all held at the Manx National Heritage Library and Archives at the Manx Museum.

MNH collections information manager Jude Dicken said: ’We know how much people love searching the newspapers for a whole variety of reasons.

’The island’s newspapers really did report every aspect of island life, from the big to the small, the more recent with photographs.

’For those doing their family history the newspapers are a vital source, but for others it offers the surprise of reading or spotting someone you know.’

She added: ’It’s so easy to use, just type in a word and away you go. There are fascinating, weird and wonderful stories to uncover and share.’

To search the online newspaper archive, type a word or a phrase in the search-box at www.imuseum.im/newspapers

Once you’ve made a search you can also browse, read and download entire newspapers. For those new to the website, a weekly tip on how best to search, save and share what you find will be posted on the MNH Facebook page.

A full list of the newspapers and publications searchable on the website is at www.imuseum.im/newspapers

During the period of free access, there will be no need to subscribe or create a login account. Customers with existing subscriptions will have their subscriptions credited with additional time once the period of free access ends.
