Songs released in memory of a talented singer and songwriter will be released at a special memorial night this weekend.
Dawn Staniford is hosting ’Cam’s Circle of Love Tribute Night’ at the Falcon Hotel, Port Erin, tomorrow night (Friday).
The night will be held to remember Cameron, who tragically killed himself, aged 20, last year, and to raise money and awareness for mental health charities and services working in the island.
Groups such as The Bird and the Beards, Heathen Chemistry, The Fossils, The Getaways and Black Water Creek will all take part, along with some unannounced special guests.
The night will also see the release of a seven-track album, ’Float Away’, which features two of Cameron’s own songs, plus cover versions of some of his favourite tracks.
’All the songs were recorded on his phone,’ said Dawn, who said she was moved to release his music after his friends organised a night to remember him in Compton Vaults, in Castletown last year.
’That night was packed, and the atmosphere was amazing,’ she said.
’They had organised was to play Cam’s songs and they invited me and my family. It was an amazing experience, standing there listening to his songs.
’The immense sense of positivity that seemed to be given off from the people there was just beautiful.’
Cameron’s friends helped to create the CD from the phone files and also produced the artwork, eventually creating an album of two original songs, ’Float Away’ and ’These Words’, and several covers, including ’Black and Gold’ and ’Shotgun’.
’He was self-taught, and he began to compose his own music at high school,’ said Dawn.
’He adapted his voice, taught himself to sing and would record himself playing his favourite songs, and eventually wrote his own songs.’
Cameron was a regular and popular live performer who went on to play regularly at the Glue Pot and Compton Vaults open mic nights every month.
His death left a lot of people shocked and deeply saddened, and Dawn hopes that releasing the CD will help people remember the good times they had spent with him.
’Cameron wrote those songs for other people. He was kind and he treated people in a way that you would want to be treated yourself. He brightened everybody’s day and he always managed to make people smile.
’I want his songs to be heard and to help raise money for charities.
’Cameron has already helped people since his death by making people start being open, talking about themselves and not feeling worried about being honest about themselves.
’I hope that this night and his album will carry that on.’
Tickets for ’Cam’s Circle of Love Tribute Night’ are £5, available through the event’s Facebook page. Money from the event will donated to the Samaritans, Reach IOM and Isle Listen.
