The future of the Cosy Nook in Port Erin is under active consideration by the local authority.

Now closed for the winter, the current lease on the popular beachside cafe comes to an end in May and it is ’unlikely’ it will reopen next season, said the local authority.

The local authority has asked for expressions of interest in the site either being refurbished or redeveloped.

Commissioners’ clerk Jason Roberts confirmed they have had responses from three architects, which will be discussed at a meeting on November 20.

Mr Roberts said: ’It is a large footprint. The scope is we are looking to provide something that can operate all year round and be a "go to" destination.

’It can also operate during the evenings as well. We want to make better use of the location. We are in discussions but nothing has been sorted out. It is unlikely it will reopen next season.’

The plan is to have a board meeting on November 27 after which they will make a statement.

Leaseholder Phil Maltby, who has had an acrimonious relationship with the authority in recent years, said: ’I’ve got 15 years’ worth of equipment to tidy up and sell. I do not want any more conflict with the commissioners.

’They want us out, that’s the game. It’s in a state through neglect.

’By the time they draw up plans and get all the permissions and building you do not see it being opened for a few years. The commissioners could have been more tactful about it. I will miss it but it is as much about the people who supported us over the years. Everybody including the customers suffer.

’The majority think it’s a beachside cafe and does not need to be anything else. But nine commissioners know better than thousands of people. We always envisioned it as a community thing.

’I have no specific plans apart from to get the boat out and go fishing.’
