Peel commissioners are appealing against a planning committee decision to allow land at the golf club be used for camping over the TT period.

The case officer at the planning department recommended refusal of the application but the planning committee approved it.

The commissioners are concerned over access to the golf club, which is via Rheast Lane.

It was said at the latest commissioner’s meeting that the planning committee and highways officer had ruled the campsite an existing venture and said that vehicle movements could be managed.

The planning committee had also said that the site would be of economic benefit to the island.

However, town clerk Derek Sewell said: ’It clearly isn’t an existing interest because the campsite was previously at the football club. If it was not a new location it would not require planning permission.

Commissioner Hazel Hannan said: ’They are looking at economics. Planning is about land use. They obviously don’t know Rheast Lane (which leads to the golf club). It’s again something where big brother in Douglas doesn’t know what’s happening in Peel.

Fellow commissioner Christine Moughtin said: ’The road surface is gone completely.’
