Greyhound Aid League Isle of Man is celebrating as they have just homed their 12th greyhound on the island in 2017.
With more rehomings in the pipeline for both this month and September, and another dog just arriving on the island, the Manx charity say they are having a very successful year so far.
Sally Mac, Ian McMullen, Roy Drinkwater and Keith Skinner established the charity in 2012 to help ex-racing greyhounds find homes on the island.
Sally explained: ’Every year thousands of greyhounds are bred for the racing industry, which means that every year, thousands of greyhounds are surplus to requirement, many as young as two years old.
’Greyhounds are usually very gentle, quiet dogs that adapt very well to life in a loving home.
’In return they are easy going, loyal companions.’
The inspiration behind the charity was a greyhound called Missy who led Ian and Sally to want to help more greyhounds find the home they deserve.
Romeo, Rose, Leo and Snowflake are the most recent greyhounds to be rehomed in the island.
Sheila Hamilton, Pauline Smith and Sally all travelled to Heysham to collect the dogs, who are all settling in to their new family homes.
The charity relies heavily on donations and the generosity of supporters to help fundraise and they host a number of fundraising events such as dog club fun days and coffee mornings, all in order to keep homing greyhounds.
These events also open the opportunity for families, keen to home one of the dogs,to meet the team and their greyhounds.
Many people and companies also generously raise money for Greyhound Aid League by holding cake bake days and dress down days at work.
