The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases has risen to 95 - and four are being treated in hospital.

Health Minister David Ashford spoke at a press briefing today to scotch ’scaremongering’ claims posted on social media relating to healthcare workers' access to personal protection equipment.

He also strongly refuted social media claims that the NSC would be turned into a morgue.

’The NSC is staying as the NSC,' he said. 'There are no plans to turn it into a morgue which quite frankly is pure scaremongering.’

He said it was important that when false information is put out it is 'robustly challenged.’

He said a total of 1,334 tests have been undertaken and 1,147 results returned, with 187 results awaited and further 86 to be sent off for analysis today.

The total number of confirmed cases has risen to 95 and the total number of hospital admissions stands at four.

Mr Ashford said a number of stories doing the rounds on social media were ’way off the mark’ including one that claimed some frontline staff at Noble's have not been provided with basic personal protection equipment.

He insisted personal protection equipment was being used in the right place and at the right time. The decision to use PPE was a clinical one, not a political one, he said.Chief Minister Howard Quayle said the number of coronavirus tests being carried out in the island, compared favourably with other jurisdictions. It equated to 15,000 tests per million compared with just 2,000 in the UK.Mr Quayle said testing was labour intensive and has to be carried out in line with the best clinical advice. 'We have to prioritise and we have to target,' he said. The Chief Minister also addressed the issue of residents who have been stranded overseas by the border closure.'We've not lost sight of these people,' he said. 'We are continuing to explore how we can help them.'He said government had to balance the needs of those who are stranded with the welfare of the whole population.
