The government still plans to drop all remaining legal coronavirus restrictions on March 31.

No moves have been made to delay this date, despite the rising number of active Covid-19 cases in the Isle of Man surpassing 1,600.

When the Independent went to press last night, there were 1,687 active cases.

The latest figures published by the government on Wednesday afternoon reported 306 new cases had emerged in the previous 24 hours.

The total figure has risen from 1,070 last Friday (March 11).

Eight people are in hospital with the virus, with none in the intensive care unit at present.

Due to the current high level of community spread, Manx Care has re-introduced a number of measures across all healthcare settings.

It is encouraging patients to think carefully about whether they bring someone with them to outpatient appointments.

Manx Care said it would prefer for patients to attend alone, unless under exceptional circumstances, so that social distancing can be maintained.

Outpatient departments across Manx Care has asked visitors to observe current guidance for patients to attend outpatient clinics and day case areas alone, following a recent increase of visitors at appointments.

Whilst social distancing and mask-wearing have been in place in outpatient areas throughout the pandemic, the organisation have said that this rise in attendees is making social distancing more difficult to implement.

Visitors are also being reminded to undertake a lateral flow test 45 minutes to an hour prior to visiting, and to only attend if it is negative.

This week also saw schools further affected by staffing issues.

On Tuesday, the headteacher at Ballaketmeen wrote to parents, asking for all Year 9 and Year 10 pupils to work from home for the rest of the week, starting Thursday.

Almost 20 per cent of teaching staff, including 23 teachers and a number of cover supervisors, were absent.

Headteacher Adrienne Burnett said the decision to stop students from coming to school had not been ‘taken lightly’ and that the school tried to do everything to avoid the scenario.
