Specialists dealing with dementia will talk about the condition at an event on Friday (October 5).
Dementia UK will host its ’Dementia Awareness and Admiral Nurse Showcase’ at the King Edward Bay Golf Club, Onchan, from 11am to 4pm.
It will have a range of speakers from Dementia UK, including Admiral Nurses Pam Kehoe and Tracey Carter, talking about the role of specialist dementia support across care settings.
The event will also hear from people with personal experiences of dementia.
When things get challenging or difficult for people with dementia and their families, Admiral Nurses work alongside them, giving the one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions people need.
There are around 1,300 people with a diagnosis of dementia on the Isle of Man.
However, there are expected to be an additional 400 people without any formal diagnosis on the island.
The event aims to highlight the importance of engaging with health and social care services early on in cases of dementia.
Julie Amphlett, who raises funds for Dementia UK, said: ’After my dad’s diagnosis we had to muddle through and it was so difficult to find the right information and support.
’After seeing how Admiral Nurses work in supporting families with dementia, we contacted Dementia UK to see if this vital service could be made available to people in the Isle of Man.’
Paul Edwards, director of clinical services at Dementia UK, said: ’As one of the greatest health conditions of our time, no one should have to face dementia alone, without any specialist advice and support.’
The event will also be an opportunity for local residents to find out more about Dementia UK’s current and future plans as well as to contribute to its cause.
The free event is open to members of the public.
