The island has now gone 40 days without a new case of coronavirus.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle said he was ‘greatly relieved’ to have asked the Lieutenant Governor to lift the state of emergency which was in place for just over 100 days.

With no new active cases, the total number confirmed since the outbreak began in March remains at 336.

Mr Quayle told a press briefing that he hoped we have ‘weathered the worst’ of the pandemic but there remains the risk that the virus will return.

‘Is the pandemic over? No, the threat from the global pandemic is still real. Our duty to protect the island community from it is equally real,’ he told reporters.

Mr Quayle said if we were to get new cases in the near future, some restrictions would need to be reinstated but he was hopeful that a ‘full lockdown scenario’ would not be necessary.
