Lung cancer patient Heather Christian has spoken about her ordeal travelling to London to be treated during the coronavirus crisis.

Mrs Christian, who lives in Onchan, was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2016 and told she had three to nine months to live.

Going to the doctor about her sore back, it was later discovered that she had cancer that had spread from her lungs and was putting extreme pressure on her spine.

She was approached by Sky through a charity she has helped, the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Mrs Christian was filmed by husband Michael wearing a mask on an aeroplane as it lifted off from Ronaldsway bound for Heathrow.

There were only six passengers on the way out and they were the only passengers on the return.

The mother-of-two said: ’Clearly there are risks attached. But if I don’t go then I won’t receive this treatment which so far has been prolonging my life.’

The video moved from a hotel room as she was about to head off to the clinic. ’Usually I’m worrying about whether my blood tests will be OK and whether my observations are OK in order for my treatment to go ahead.

’In addition this time clearly entering a clinical environment brings its own risks too in terms of the Covid-19 virus so I’m a bit worried about that.’

She added she was confident that the clinic did all it could to minimise the risk of infection.

Mrs Christian told the Manx Independent: ’Travelling through London was surreal. It was eerie.

’There wasn’t a single tourist in the area around Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.’

She said she was lucky to get hotel accommodation as so many had shut.

’The situation could last a long time,’ she said as the film showed her sitting back on the plane. ’For me tomorrow’s not guaranteed. I know it isn’t really for anybody but obviously I am terminally ill.

’The thought of never seeing my family and friends in person again is really hard. But I know I’m not the only person in this situation.

’This is happening to people all over the world. It’s desperately, desperately sad.’

Mrs Christian is in isolation because of her condition while Mr Christian has gone into 14 days’ isolation after the trip to London.
