Martyn Perkins Garff MHK’s Human Tissue and Organ Donation Bill, unofficially known as Daniel’s Law, was read out and passed the critical clauses stage in the Legislative Council on Tuesday.
The Bill completely overhauls the Human Tissue Act and current legislation for organ donation by assuming that people would give permission to donate organs, rather than having to ’opt-in’.
If they didn’t want to donate, they would have to opt-out.
Mr Perkins said: ’I am very pleased to see the progress of the Bill.
’It will make more organs available and improve many people’s lives from one sad event.’
He encouraged people to make their wishes known regarding donation by either entering their details on the UK organ donation database, informing a partner or close relative.
The Bill will now go on for a third and final reading.
The Bill is known unofficially as ’Daniel’s Law’ in memory of Daniel Boyde -who died in a car crash at the age of just 15 - and to recognise the work of his mum Diane Taylor, who has campaigned on organ donation and worked with others to create an organ donation memorial garden at Noble’s Hospital.
