A mail delivery office had to be closed for deep cleaning after postal workers tested positive for coronavirus.

It is understood that two staff based out of the Southern Delivery Office have had a confirmed diagnosis for Covid-19 and there is a third assumed case who has not been tested but has a family member who has tested positive.

A fourth is self-isolating as he had contact with the first case. It is understood a number of other postal staff at the base are currently off work in self-isolation.

The Southern Delivery Office in Ronaldsway was closed on Friday for a deep clean and staff were moved to a different building to deal with parcel deliveries.

Over the weekend the building was cleaned again but is now back open, with postal workers splitting shifts so they are not working together.

It is understood postal workers were told of the first confirmed case of Covid-19 last Thursday, with the second case confirmed on Saturday.

In a statement, Isle of Man Post Office said it takes the health and safety of its people, customers and the communities it serves ’very seriously’.

It said: ’Last week IoMPO was required to activate a business continuity plan in one of its sites.

’This was handled both swiftly and professionally to ensure the safeguarding of the health of all staff.

’There was no disruption to service for customers.

’IoMPO continues to ensure its workforce abide to the latest advice from the World Health Organisation and Public Health to help prevent the spread of infection, and seek to support them at every turn of this immensely challenging time for our island.

’Protecting our people and customers remains our prime consideration in the daily operation of our business.’

The spokesman said the Post Office has an ’expansive range’ of preventative measures in place to mitigate risk to its workforce and customers, and this is reviewed on a daily basis and adapted accordingly.
