Diabetes Isle of Man has launched a new support pack to be given to individuals recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

The packs will be rolled out to GP surgeries across the island.

Natasha Parry, development manager for the charity, said: ’Over the last few months, we’ve carried out extensive research on the services currently available for people living with diabetes.

’Working closely with the specialist diabetes team and engaging with stakeholders and individuals alike. We’ve identified a number of gaps, particularly for those living with type 2 diabetes.

’We’ve created these support packs to ensure that the information given at diagnosis is the same for all, and that everyone is given the necessary local signposting.’

Diabetes affects around 6% of the island’s population, which the charity says is set to increase. The charity added: ’The signs and symptoms of diabetes can develop at any time, and early diagnosis is so important to help prevent further health complications.

’If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following, get in touch with your GP: going to the toilet a lot, especially at night; excessive thirst; feeling more tired than usual; losing weight without trying to; genital itching or thrush; cuts and wounds take longer to heal; and blurred vision.’
