Rushen Heritage Trust is kicking off 2020 with two talks in the coming weeks, focusing on the history of the island’s south.

The first event is by Andrew Johnson who will be giving an illustrated talk about Silent Stones, Eloquent Witnesses: the Enduring Fascination of the Meayll Circle (pictured).

The Meayll Circle is one of the island’s most distinctive ancient monuments. Built during the Neolithic period by people who were able to bring about the creation of the monument and others like it.

Mr Johnson, Inspector of Ancient Monuments for MNH, will explore the landscape setting of this chambered cairn and delve into published and unpublished sources to offer old and new thoughts about this enigmatic site.

The talk is at 7.30pm on Monday, January 13, in Talons function room at the Falcon’s Nest Hotel, Port Erin, tickets £5.

In February, the RHT will be hosting an evening with the curator at the Manx Aviation and Military Museum, Ivor Ramsden.

Mr Ramsden’s talk is entitled Heroes, Villains and Victims: Manxmen in the First World War and takes place at 7.30pm on Monday, February 10, also in Talons function.

Tickets for both events are available from Bridge Bookshop, Erin News and the Falcon’s Nest in Port Erin, and Calvert Newsagents in Port St Mary. Alternatively, email RHT coordinator John Quirk at [email protected] or call him on 464634.
