A former ticket office at the Great Laxey Wheel is set to be removed as part of the latest phase of conservation and improvement works at the historic landmark.
The building, which was built in 1986, has welcomed more than one million visitors during its lifetime, serving as the entrance point for generations of people visiting the island’s famous waterwheel.
Manx National Heritage (MNH) said the removal would follow the recent opening of a new Visitor Welcome Hub and Shop, which provides improved facilities and an introduction to the history and significance of the site.
John-Paul Walker, Historic Buildings Architect for MNH, said the organisation was continuing to invest in the attraction while protecting its heritage.
He said: ‘We are delighted to continue our investment in the Great Laxey Wheel, building on the significant conservation work already undertaken.
‘With the new Visitor Welcome Hub and Shop, further restoration works progressing and refreshed interpretation planned, Manx National Heritage is creating an even better experience for visitors while ensuring Lady Isabella’s remarkable heritage is preserved and celebrated for generations to come.’
The new Visitor Welcome Hub was itself the subject of controversy, after MNH submitted revised designs in January following criticism of earlier plans described as ‘inappropriate’.

The latest phase follows conservation work in recent years, including repointing and repainting the wheel’s rod duct.
The original duct featured 32 arches stretching more than 169 metres along Glen Mooar Valley.
Over the winter, MNH will also refresh interpretation across the wheel complex, helping visitors learn more about its engineering, history and links to the Isle of Man’s mining industry.
The Great Laxey Wheel, commonly known as Lady Isabella, was built to pump water from the Laxey mines and remains one of the islland’s best-known landmarks.
MNH said the ongoing programme aimed to safeguard the Victorian engineering structure for future generations while improving the experience for residents and visitors.
