Hundreds of people took part in Sight Matters’ Coast to Coast walk at the weekend.

The annual event saw contenders walk from Douglas to Peel and was done to raise money for Sight Matters, formerly known as the Manx Blind and Welfare Society, a charity that looks after the interests of people with serious sight loss on the Isle of Man.

Police cadets took on the walk following another fundraiser the day before.

Constable Michael Griffiths looks after the cadets.

He was proud of how the police cadets had taken on the challenge.

He said: ’We wanted to challenge them.

’It was tough going because we had done another big walk the day before but luckily they have such boundless energy as young people.

’Even though they were blistered and exhausted from the day before, they carried on regardless.’

He added: ’We like to do as much as we can when it comes to fundraising to the benefit of the island.

’I know I did about 248,000 steps that day during that walk.’

Walking began at 1:30pm for one lap of the NSC before contenders followed the old railway track and then on to the finish at the House of Manannan.

As people followed the old railway line, they were able to take in some views en route.

The full walking distance was 12 miles.

For those who wanted a shorter challenge, they could alternatively start at St John’s in the car park by St John’s School later in the day.

This route was about three miles.

The total raised for the full day of walking is currently still being calculated but will be announced in the next week.
