A 24-year-old fisherman from Ramsey was this week fined £400 for being drunk and disorderly.
Kieran Kevin Kermeen admitted swearing at police and threatening to spit at them during a confrontation on Ramsey quay.
Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that Kermeen, who lives at Mooragh Promenade, was outside the Trafalgar pub on West Quay in Ramsey on July 4 at 1.30am. He was approached by police regarding an unrelated matter and was said to have glazed eyes and be slightly slurring his speech.
He was warned about his conduct and initially left the area after being asked to do so.
However, as police were speaking to another man, Kermeen returned and started swearing at police.
He then made off, only to return to the area again shortly afterwards and was arrested.
Kermeen was said to have become confrontational, calling one officer a ’mutant’ and threatening to spit at them.
The court heard that he has no previous convictions.
Defence advocate David Reynolds asked for credit to be given for his client’s guilty plea.
The advocate said: ’Mr Kermeen had been out with his brother drinking most of the day.
’On a scale out of one to 10 of how drunk he was, he assessed himself a 10.
’He says he has no recollection of what happened and is embarrassed hearing the case summary.
’He wishes to apologise to the police officer.’
Mr Reynolds went on to say that Kermeen had lost his good character as a result of the offence and had lived on the island for two years.
’He works as a crew member on a fishing boat and has been unable to work due to being here today,’ said the advocate.
Deputy High Bailiff Chris Arrowsmith told Kermeen: ’If you go out drinking and end up anywhere near rating yourself as 10 out of 10 drunk, bad things will happen to you.’
Kermeen was also ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £20 per week.
