An application (19/00932/D) to place an information board on the northern end of the former Foxdale railway has been submitted by the village’s heritage volunteers.

The board would be one of 10 that the Foxdale Heritage charity wants to place to provide a wide range of information about the village’s social and architectural past.

The proposed board would be number four of 10 and would detail the history of the railway which once ran from Foxdale to St John’s to carry ore from the mines.

During the 19th century, Foxdale’s mines were considered some of the best in the British Isles.

Details on the board would include the origins of the ’five bob’ bridge and it’s impact on bus services.

The board would be a total of 1.6m tall and have a width of 94cm and would be placed close to where the former railway line crossed the main road just south of Lower Foxdale.

The application comes after the village’s former railway station was turned into a heritage centre.

A grant of £750 from the Donald Collister Heritage Trust, allowed Foxdale Heritage to replace the north facing door.

This completed the external renovations and restored the building to its original look .

The heritage centre opens on the first Sunday of each month from 2pm until 4pm and admission is free .
