The latest edition of the Institute for Historic Building Conservation’s journal ’Context’ is bringing Manx architecture to an international audience.
The publication will highlight the island’s variety of stone monuments, ancient buildings and architecture.
It came about after architect and IHBC Manx representative Ashley Petit invited the institute’s director, Sean O’Reilly, to the island to experience Manx architecture for himself.
The journal features 11 articles, written by some of the island’s best known figures and historians, such as and Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas MHK, who is also chairman of Culture Vannin, and Peter Kelly, who writes about the architect Armitage Rigby.
Mr Thomas’s piece is titled ’Building conservation matters in the Isle of Man’ which ’introduces the series of Manx articles, and talks about the importance of buildings to a sense of place, and to the expression of our culture and heritage within the UNESCO Biosphere status’.
He notes in his piece how in 2016, Tynwald voted to encourage ’the review of government strategies, plans and policies to raise the quality of the island’s architecture and built environment, including those aimed to conserve its built heritage’.
Also writing in the journal is the director of Manx National Heritage, Edmund Southworth, who gives a brief history of 10,000 years of settlement on the island.
Matthew Richardson and Steve Blackford cover the history of the TT races as well as the famous smugglers’ boat the Peggy, while Ashley Pettit examines the iconic Three Legs design of the Sea Terminal from when it was constructed in the 1960s.
Mr Pettit said: ’I can only encourage conservation professionals and planners in the island to take the opportunity to submit profiles and be elected to the IHBC, where they will get support as well as this excellent publication three times a year even if its focus is not always the Isle of Man.’
