Musicians young and old, from all over the island, are being encouraged to sing, get out your instruments or make whatever sounds appeal to you.

The Isle of Man will join in with ’Making Music Day’, a global event held to highlight the importance of music, which takes place tomorrow (Friday), and there are a wide variety of events and occasions across the island to help people join in the fun and make their own music.

Re-named ’Laa Jannoo Kiaull’ for the Manx event, there will be several events around Douglas, with the Henry Bloom Noble Library, in Duke Street, Douglas, hosting a full day of activities a day of free events, including a session of Manx songs for mums and tots at 10am, a harp performance from Christa McCartney, a lecture on a great era of Manx music at 1pm by author Maurice Powell and more concerts from singer Matt Creer at 3pm and the Bree youth folk group at 4pm.

Douglas Council has also provided a gazebo and generator for bands or individuals wanting to plug in and play in the sunken gardens on Loch Promenade, from 9am onwards, and musicians are also welcome to perform in Strand Street.

In Laxey, Garff Commissioners are to open up Christ Church, next to the tram station, which will be open from 10am until 3pm and filled with musical instruments for people to play, and in the south of the island, both Castletown and Port Erin Commissioners have invited musicians to perform in the town centres throughout the day.

Organiser Chloe Woolley, from Culture Vannin, said that the day is about encouraging people to join in and appreciate music

’Anyone can join in and do something,’ said Chloe.

’It is about encouraging people to get outside and get involved playing music, in the street, or anywhere in public.

’It would be nice to do this each year and make it an annual event.

’Whether you are playing, dancing or listening, we want to show that music is an important part of people’s lives.’
