Kai Botha moved to the Isle of Man last year with his girlfriend, Charlotte Smith.
Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Kai works at Capital International Group, where he is the head of marketing, and his job is to conceptualise, implement and measure digital marketing strategies that grow the company’s brand.
Earlier this year, Kai completed a charity trek to the Mount Everest base camp, to raise funds for the Manx Wildlife Trust.
The mammoth hike took 12 days to accomplish, taking him to 17,600ft above sea level and enduring temperatures as low as minus 25 C.
He managed to raise £1,500 for the conservation trust.
What is your idea of a perfect meal?
An all-you-can-eat sushi feast. My record stands at 70 pieces, but I would not recommend anything above 60.
What is your favourite way to relax?
It would be by doing anything outdoors, like hiking, mountain biking or kayaking. I’ve never been very good at relaxing.
What is your greatest extravagance?
My unnecessarily large collection of ties.
Do you have any pets?
No pets. Charlotte says that I’m ’high maintenance’ enough.
What is your greatest achievement?
Personally, I don’t think greatness is ever truly achieved. Greatness should be something you should always strive for but never truly attain. The act of pursuing greatness is more important than the end result.
But If I could take the liberty of rephrasing that question to ’what am I most proud of to date?’ I would say that hiking to Everest base camp in December last year was a pretty special moment.
What is your favourite time of the year?
Winter. I love snow and, if I could ski all day, I would.
What is the first job you ever had?
I was an intern at an advertising agency called FCB, where I was mostly relegated to doing the coffee-runs.
Do you have any irrational fears?
I’m terrified of having to eat with my hands. I even eat pizza with cutlery.
What is your worst habit?
Procrastinating.
What is your favourite book?
All of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books.
What is your favourite TV programme?
Game of Thrones.
What is your favourite band/artist at the moment?
Has to be a tie between Queen and Led Zeppelin.
What is your favourite part of the Isle of Man?
The coastal footpath from Cronk ny Arrey Laa to Bradda Head.
What is the last show/band that you saw live?
Foster the People. They were okay.
If time/money were no object, what would be your perfect day?
I would go back and summit Mount Everest.
Choose three people, dead or alive, to invite to dinner?
Alexander the Great, the Queen singer Freddie Mercury and the inventor Nicola Tesla.
Which do you prefer:
Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?
Not fair, but Lord of the Rings.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs.
Birthday or Christmas?
Christmas.
Starter or pudding?
Starter.
Quiet night in or night out?
If it was up to me, quiet night, but the mates wouldn’t have it.
