Matt Kelly is 36, and lives in Ramsey.
He is better known as one of the hardest working musicians and prolific song writers in the island, and last week he released his second album of original songs,’Time For Matt Kelly’.
When not performing, Matt, a former member of the folk group King Chiaullee, is also a music teacher.
What is your idea of a perfect meal?
The greatest thing anyone can really do for me is invite me round for tea. I appreciate it more than anything else. What is your favourite way to relax?
I can lose hours with a guitar or mandolin, either just playing stuff or if a melody appears and I manage to write a new song from it then I’m more than happy.
What is your greatest extravagance
Buying guitars and mandolins on EBay! Some say you shouldn’t ever buy a musical instrument without playing it first but it’s worked out extremely well for me.
What is your greatest achievement?
Being smuggled for a gig into Glastonbury festival in 2010 in the boot of a car.
What is your favourite time of the year?
I think it’s got to be the summer. When the weather is always warm, the thought of wearing a coat is just out of the question, and everybody is in the best of spirits.
What is the first job you ever had?
Cannell’s bakery in the summer of 1995 when I was 13. I was basically just doing the washing up to start with but then I was allowed to make flapjacks on my own and draw the faces on the gingerbread men. Fun stuff like that.
Do you have any irrational fears?
Ok, I know spiders are small, but the way they move just makes me freeze on the spot. I would never wish any harm to them but I’m always glad when they’ve moved on and are out of sight.
What is your worst habit?
Staying in bed too long.
What is your favourite book?
The Great Gatsby was the the last book I read I think.
What is your favourite TV programme?
I love watching Spaced. Also, on a day to day basis I’m always fascinated by Homes Under The Hammer.
What is your favourite band/artist at the moment?
My favourite bands are always pretty close the home. I went to a brilliant Imar show at the Peel Centenary Centre last year and I’m always keen to see what they do next.
What is your favourite part of the Isle of Man?
I live in the north and I like wandering around there as much as possible. The big long straight between Sandygate and Ballaugh Cronk is always a favourite.
What is the last show/band that you saw live?
We had a great gig recently as a warm up to the Shennaghys Jiu festival, in the Mitre Hotel in Ramsey with performers such as Adam Melvin, Jamie Smith, Paul Rogers, Jeff Jepson and Kelvin Kerr.
If time/money were no object, what would be your perfect day?
We would have to fix the weather as well so that the sun was shining. Aside from that I would just like to catch up with all my favourite people for some kind of summer festival in a field.
Choose three people, dead or alive, to invite to dinner?
I’d love to meet Paul McCartney, I think he’d be a great guest to have. It would have to be a fun event so I’d love to have some comedians like Sean Lock and Jonny Vegas.
