A languages teacher at St Ninian’s High School is swimming around the island in an attempt to break a record.

Carole Laporte set off on August 3 from Niarbyl, swimming a couple of hours each day. She is hoping to break the current record which is 36 hours and was set by Anna-Carin Nordin in 2018.

The French and Spanish teacher had planned to spend her summer travelling around the Philippines and Brittany, where she is originally from, but when Covid-19 broke out all her plans were cancelled.

So in order to keep busy during her six-week break she decided to complete the swim, something that has been on her bucket list for a long time.

Despite Storm Ellen delaying the final stages of her swim, she still hopes to finish next Tuesday or Wednesday back in Niarbyl and complete the last four legs of her swim.

Miss Laporte is completing the challenge in legs of one to two hours and has currently swam 13 legs in a time of 23 hours and 55 minutes.

Whilst she is in the water she is supported by Steve Watt who kayaks alongside her and has organised the various legs according to the tides and the currents.

Only three other people have achieved this feat, the first being Mercedes Gleitze in 1930, Anna-Carin Nordin in 2018 and Mike Davies in 2019.
