The fifth Isle of Man Newspapers Charity Golf Challenge took place at the glorious Ramsey Golf Club.

The sun was shining for the event, which was organised in aid of Mannin Cancers.

With a 56-strong field of keen golfers we knew that the scoring would be competitive and the course was in its usual high standard of maintenance.

Starting with the individual event it was James Leith who took third place with an excellent score of 37 points.

His front nine was disappointing but with a level par 35 gross back nine this lifted him onto the podium.

The runner-up, with 38 points, was Craig Dalton with a very respectable 19 points on the front and back nine. Mr Consistency had a very good card with one nett eagle and three nett birdies but for a seven on the 11th hole he could have easily taken the first prize.

This, however, was won easily in the end by the Ramsey Club stalwart Tony White.

He managed an excellent 42 points and a four over gross performance. This included a remarkable two on the eighth hole, I’m sure the handicap secretary at Ramsey will be taking a close look at Tony’s handicap for future events.

In the team event again it was a competitive battle and taking third spot it was team Amphlett/Simpson with a fine 97 points.

In second place it was down to a combination of Investec and Isle of Man Newspapers team.

Mark Davenport played some excellent golf to sure up this team achieving a creditable 102 points.

First place was won quite clearly in the end by the Coutts team headed up by James Leith and supported by the overall winner Tony White they were always in good shape to take the spoils.

We would like to thank our sponsors, Mylchreest’s, for their support of the Nearest the Pin competition, where Peter O’Donnell won the Mitsubishi Outlander Hybrid for a weekend of his choice.

The longest drive competition was won by Orry-James Creane, who won a nice medal.

With the support of those taking place and the auction that followed we managed to raise £3,300 for Mannin Cancers which makes this an excellent success for our local community.

We would like to thank Ramsey Golf Club for its continued support for this event. The catering on the day was outstanding.
