Cronk-y-Voddy Ploughing Society will hold its now legendary ’Big Spud’ night followed by a slideshow on Saturday (March 25) at the Tynwald Inn in St John’s starting at 7pm.
This is when those wishing to take part can come and collect a seed potato to be grown in a tub.
Once grown it is brought to the annual produce show in September where it is weighed to see who has grown the heaviest crop. The winner is awarded the ’Big Spud’ trophy.
As well as featuring the ’Big Spud’ weigh-in, the produce show has a wide range of classes including ones for vegetables, fruit, flowers, jams, pickles, cakes, eggs and photography.
Children also have several classes of their own and there is usually a demonstration of old country skills such as lanket-making.
The show then closes with an auction of the produce afterwards to raise funds for a local charity which is chosen before the event.
Tubs to grow your spuds in are available on March 25 so everyone has the same size tub for a fair competition.
The tubs are being part paid for by the club.
The ’Big Spud’ night is a huge favourite in the farming calendar year.
Also taking place on ’Big Spud’ night will be a prize presentation for the winners at the most recent Cronk-y-Voddy Ploughing Society ploughing match, followed by a slideshow presentation.
The slideshow presentation will be shown by Dougie and Margaret Dodds and will feature photographs from local events which have taken place throughout the year.
A carvery will also be served on March 25 at the Tynwald Inn and everyone is welcome to attend the event.
Last year’s produce show was the 23rd time the annual produce show had been held.
