A Ballakermeen High School student cycled 24 hours in tribute to his teacher while raising funds for charities.
All of this was in memory of his form tutor, Carol Synnott, who died on May 5.
As part of the tribute, approximately £1,900 was raised towards Jake’s chosen charities: Hospice Isle of Man and Alzhiemer’s Society UK and Ireland.
Mrs Synnott’s husband, Barry, and son, Mike, set Jake off at 10am on Saturday. The 15-year-old was joined by many who kept to social distancing rules while cycling with him. His friend, Jessie Owens, also ran 40km in support in just over four hours.
Jake said: ’I couldn’t have done it without all the amazing support, from family, friends and school teachers for riding with me and likewise for people cheering me on.
’What the challenge was all about was Mrs Carol Synnott, my school tutor who I greatly miss.
’Her husband Barry and son Mike gave me great support for the challenge and I would sincerely like to thank everyone that kindly donated in memory of Carol for my chosen charities.’
To date, Jake has raised nearly £6,000 towards the two charities as part of his ’3 Country Challenge’ fundraiser.
The postponed challenge would have seen him cycling approximately 180 miles across the width of Ireland, running about 12 miles across the width of the Isle of Man and walking 190 miles across the width of England this summer.
Mrs Synnott, who taught English and global perspectives at the Douglas school, was a big encourager of Jake’s mission.
He called her ’one of the best tutors’ he’s had.
Jake would also like to thank Manx Harriers for the use of its clubhouse and Lee Notman of Just Lee Photography.
