One of the island’s most influential art tutors will be celebrated by a joint exhibition between the Manx museum and the Sayle Gallery this year, with a tribute made to the popular artist and sculptor David Gilbert, who died in 2016.
Opening on Saturday, February 10, there will be an exhibition of David’s work at the Sayle Gallery, entitled ’Another Story About How It Is’, along with ’Crossing Open Ground’, held in the museum gallery, opening on the same day.
Both exhibitions are named after two of his pieces of art work,
David and his wife Sheila taught and mentored young people and aspiring artists at their farm in Kirk Michael.
Both displays will feature work created by two local artists, Nicola Dixon and Simon Buttimore, who David helped nurture as younger artists.
Examples of David’s art work can still be seen decorating the top of the Manx museum, in a series of relief sculptures around the top of the building, and in the etched glass pattern on the doors. The exhibition is being split due to the large amount of David’s work.
The exhibition ’Crossing open Ground’ will remain open at the museum until Saturday, May 5.
The Sayle gallery will retain a selection of David’s work on display and create another display, featuring two of his fellow art tutors, David Fletcher and Norman Sayle, which will open on Saturday, March 24.
