Members of the Callister clan from Kirk Michael will represent the Isle of Man at an Irish music festival, after their song was named as ’Arrane Son Mannin’ at the weekend, during a concert held at the Peel Masonic Hall.

Husband and wife duo Juan and Jo Callister, singing under the group name ’Droch Yindas’ sung their original composition, ’Yn Faageydyr’, accompanied by sister Jo Callister and keyboard player Katie Lawrence, who composed the music.

The song, which translates as ’Leaving Thee’, was written by Juan’s father John ’Dog’ Callister, a poet and the third Manx bard, and translated into Manx Gaelic by Michael resident Phil Kelly.

The three judges, Dot Saunders, David Kilgallon and Jamys O’Meara, praised the song, saying that the Manx was good and the tune was memorable.

’They did a really good job, and its fair to say that all the judges enjoyed the song a lot,’ said David.

They will perform the song at the International Pan Celtic competition in Letterkenny, Ireland, during Easter, alongside original songs written and sung in Scottish, Welsh, Cornish, Irish and Breton.

The concert also heard performances from Peddyr Cubberley and Malcolm Stitt, Caarjyn Cooidjagh, Matt Creer and Josephine Evans, Mera Royle and an opening set of traditional Manx tunes from Owen Williams, Jack Mclean and singer Sarah James.

Seven year old Aalish Kilgallon sang a song, ’S’feayr Yn Oie’.
