A former youth drop-in centre in Onchan has been sold.

Kenyon’s Cafe, which is on the corner of Church Road and Main Road, was advertised by estate agent Dean Wood for £85,000.

The former butcher’s shop was used as a social club after it was bought by former Onchan MHK Peter Karran in the late 1990s and opened as a drop-in centre in 2001.

Mr Karran then sold it to Onchan District Commissioners in 2005.

However, it was finally closed in November 2017 , with the youth facilities moving into the ’HUB’ on School Road.

The building is currently subject to a planning application to transform it into a residential property.

The plans, submitted by Onchan Commissioners, show two bedrooms on the upper floor with a kitchenette, living space, bathroom and outside courtyard to the rear of the property.

The new owner will also have to replace the windows and carry out major internal reconfiguration, due to the building’s previous uses.

It is believed that the property, as it is today, was first used as a branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Bank in 1914, the village’s first bank.

In 1935, the bank moved and a Mr Frank Turner occupied the property as a retail outlet. After that, it was later occupied by Kenyon the butcher, which gave the drop-in its name.

An Onchan Commissioners spokesman confirmed only that an offer for the property had been accepted.

The spokesman declined to say who had bought the property or how much the purchaser paid.
