A law firm has signed a three-year deal to sponsor the Triskelion Polo Club.

There is a busy season ahead for the the club, with fixtures scheduled for Great Meadow near Castletown between now and the end of September.

The 2018 summer season got under way with a beginner grass pitch conversion course and throughout the coming months there are 15 tournaments and courses scheduled to take place, along with weekly lessons and club chukkas to which spectators are very welcome.

Triskelion Polo Club’s tournaments are played over a weekend.

Each match consists of four chukkas which each last seven minutes.

These tournaments are growing with a number of up-and-coming players to watch out for and so the club expects the matches to be fast-paced and to a high standard.

The club also has a number of novice tournaments, scheduled to be played on a few Tuesday evenings through the summer.

These are developmental matches for beginners who want to get stuck in at a pace they feel comfortable with, surrounded by other novices.

These matches are more instructional with the club coach Cameron giving guidance so the game can run smoothly and players can get a handle of the match and the rules.

Douglas-based law firm Appleby is sponsoring the club for an undisclosed sum.

Kyle Sutherland, a partner in the company’s corporate department, said: ’Supporting the local community is very important to Appleby and our colleagues.

’What’s great to see is that the Triskelion Polo Club is making polo an inclusive sport on the island, with members ranging in age and ability. We look forward to working with them as they look to grow the sport on and off the field, encouraging both players and spectators to the club.’

Triskelion Polo Club was set up in 2014 and has organised many ’Learn to Play’ events for all ages, including special sessions for schools and corporate events.

It has also arranged a number of fully competitive polo matches, including games against the British Army Reserves on Ballaugh Beach which were watched by more than 700 spectators.

For the summer 2018 season, the club has currently 25 members and 32 horses.

This is expected to grow as new people get involved at different stages throughout the year.

The club is run by general manager Frazer Houston and his brother Cameron, the island’s only qualified Hurlingham Polo Association coach, who are both experienced polo players.

Frazer said: ’It is possible to pick up polo very quickly, no matter what age, and even without any previous riding experience.

’All our matches are played in a competitive but friendly spirit and are enjoyed by all who take part. We welcome new members for what is going to be a very busy summer 2018 season.’

Equipment is provided for those who need it and coaching can also be given to those who have their own ponies.
