The report into the events of the Laxey flood in October last year has been published, including 10 recommendations.

Compiled by UK based Arup, the independent review looked at the causes of the flood and ways to lessen the risk of a repeat event in the future.

The recommendations include:

â?¢ Greater priority is given to preparing to deal with flood risks and flood resilience on the Isle of Man.

â?¢ The governance of flood risk management across the Island should be reviewed.

â?¢ The current provision of resource for flood risk management is reviewed.

â?¢ Greater urgency is given to delivering the National Strategy on Sea Defences, Flooding and Coastal Erosion 2016.

â?¢ An investigation by the Treasury of continuing access to and affordability of Flood Insurance should be resolved.

â?¢ The consents process outlined in the Flood Risk Management Act 2013 should be implemented for all works on designated watercourses.

â?¢ Management of blockage and debris risks in high risk catchments is improved

â?¢ Greater attention and more urgency is given to existing plans to deal with surface water flooding.

â?¢ Review and improve practices of flood forecasting and warning.

â?¢ Recognising the impact that flooding can have on well-being, open a dialogue with the National Flood Forum to explore whether their services can be extended to the Isle of Man.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle expressed his ’deepest sympathy and regret to those affected by the terrible floods last October’.

Mr Quayle added: ’That’s why I asked Arup to independently review what happened and lessons that could be learned by the government in order to prevent this happening again. They have produced a detailed report and I would like to thank the team for their hard work.

’I would also like to thank the residents of Laxey and their representatives both at Garff Commissioners and the Garff MHKs for their assistance in providing evidence and working with Arup to produce the report.

’Our efforts don’t stop here. Arup has made 10 recommendations, all of which will be implemented in full. I have asked the Chief Secretary to oversee delivery of these recommendations on my behalf.

’I never want to see the events of October happen again and, together with all parts of Government, it is our priority to ensure that we continue to build more resilient communities going forward and protect them and their homes to the best of our ability from unfortunate events such as floods.’

We will have coverage of the full report and reaction to it in next week’s Examiner, available in shops and online Tuesday.
