Tributes have been paid to Onchan Commissioners’ former clerk and chief executive Malcolm Hulme.

Mr Hulme died on Saturday after a short illness.

In a statement, Onchan Commissioners said: ’He will be remembered with great affection by colleagues, and as a knowledgeable clerk by members of the commissioners.’

Malcolm joined the authority as chief executive/ clerk in 2007, returning home from Shetland after a long service with Scottish Water. He retired in 2016.

The Commissioners said: ’He worked tirelessly to promote the independence of local government, and Onchan in particular. His work with board members over the years was greatly appreciated, where his advice both in public and in private was always a key factor in decision making.’

It continues: ’His interest in history and genealogy was often put to good use in his work for the authority.

’Having grown up in Onchan, his knowledge of people and places, now part of our history, made it easy for him to establish a rapport with other long-time residents and help them where he could. For this, his presence in what became known as his "consulting rooms", otherwise the Manx Arms, will be sorely missed.’

Mr Hulme leaves his parents, Peter and June, and his daughter Jodie. The funeral will take place at St Peter’s Church, Onchan on Thursday, March 8 at 11am.
