A 24-year-old man has admitted grabbing his wife by the throat twice and smashing a mirror during a row.
Rui Filipe Monteiro Ramos, of Cullyn Link, Anagh Coar, admitted offences of common assault on a female, destroying property, and resisting arrest.
He will be sentenced on January 21 after a probation report has been completed.
Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court that Ramos was at the woman’s home on November 12 collecting some belongings.
He was said to be agitated and then lunged at her, grabbing her by the throat and pinning her against a wall.
He then kicked a mirror worth £200, smashing it before again grabbing his wife by the throat.
Ramos left the property but told the woman: ’You’re getting everything you deserve.
’If the kids weren’t here it would have been worse.’
The woman locked him out of the house but he then began kicking the door and telling her she should cut herself.
Arrest
Police arrived to find him still outside the house and he resisted as they tried to arrest him, tensing up and making his arms rigid.
Ramos swore at the officers.
He was put on the ground but one officer was said to have sustained a broken finger during the struggle.
At police headquarters , Ramos admitted grabbing his wife by the throat twice saying that the marriage had been breaking down.
He said: ’Take me to jail, that’s where I belong, either that or dead.’
He said he had gone to the house to get his personal belongings and that he might have ’smacked her’ if the kids had not been there.
Ramos told police: ’I’m an idiot.
’I’m sorry to everyone.’
The court heard that Ramos also has a conviction in May for assaulting his wife and that a probation order is currently in place.
Ramos was granted bail with a condition that he contact probation.
