Two drama groups from the Isle of Man - Hog The Limelight and Rushen Players - have been invited to perform their prize-winning one-act plays at the British All Winners Festival at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre in Woking, Surrey.
On Thursday, July 19, Rushen Players will perform Alan Bennett’s A Cream Cracker Under the Settee", which was this year judged best play in the island’s One Act Festival.
Pat Clewis - who won awards as best actress and for the best comedic moment awards, plus nomination for best dramatic moment - portrays feisty, independent, 85-year-old widow Doris, fighting the authorities to be allowed to stay in her own home and not be consigned to the dreaded Stafford House Care Home.
Although essentially a monologue, Ian Galloway, as supporting actor in a small role, scooped the special adjudicators’ award for his contribution.
There were also nominations for best director and best lights and sound.
On Saturday, July 20, Hog The Limelight will be performing The Perfect Gentleman," which, through his letters, tells the amazing story of First World War soldier Captain Cyril Gordon Walker.
It won seven awards at last year’s Manx Isle of Man One-Act Festival - Best Adult Play, Best Adult Director - Sharon Mitchell who also wrote it, Best Actor - John Walker (Cyril Walker’s great-grandson) ,Best actress - Rachael Joughin, Best Dramatic Moment - Rachael Joughin, and the adjudicator’s award - which is discretionary - for Best Stage Design. The play then went on to win at the next level - the Northern Semi-Finals at Saltburn By The Sea where John again won the award for best actor.
