Two charity workers from Douglas are currently in Romania, helping Ukrainian refugees near the border.
Ruth and Chris Baker, who are part of the charity Hands of Hope, have been visiting border crossing points to deliver supplies to those fleeing the conflict.
Hands of Hope has been operating in northeastern Romania for nearly 20 years, and with the war between Russia and Ukraine being on its ‘doorstep’ they say that they are ‘placed right where we need to be to help’.
In the town of Cobila, where they are based when not in the island, they run a community centre which was established before the war.
They are also working in collaboration with local charities, and have their own 4x4 vehicle.
A statement from the charity this week said: ‘People are coming across in increasing numbers looking for accommodation and a time to draw breath before travelling to family in other parts of Europe’, and that the couple just travelled to the Rădăuți-Prut border crossing.
It continued: ‘Immense thanks to everyone who has donated funds.
‘We purchased blankets and are about to take them to a sports hall where over 100 refugees have temporary shelter.
‘Snowy -2C day here at Cobila.
‘Praying for those folks travelling or waiting at borders, praying for peace.’
Mrs Baker described how there were long queues of cars and minbuses filled with refugees waiting to cross into Romania.
Around half a million people are already thought to have been displaced by the fighting in the Ukraine.
A Justgiving campaign for Hands of Hope’s efforts has almost raised its £5,000 target.
