When the German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld died in Paris on February 19, he left behind one of the world’s most famous cats - Choupette.
He first met Choupette in 2011 when he agreed to look after her for a friend, and then he changed her life forever.
He is said to have considered Choupette to be his ’one true love’ and stated that he would marry her if such a thing were possible.
She lived a life of luxury, eating from silver dishes at the dining table (not on the floor), with a personal chef, two maids and a bodyguard.
Choupette, a fluffy, white, blue-eyed Birman (a type of Burmese) cat, is undoubtedly photogenic and seems to enjoy being the centre of attention, but few could have predicted her rise to stardom.
Lagerfeld set about making her an integral part of his world-famous brand, and she appeared in hundreds of photo shoots with top models, as well as with Lagerfeld himself (one can’t help wondering, though, how he managed to wear black all the time without being covered in long white cat hairs!). Choupette now has almost 250,000 Instagram followers, and she is said to have earned several million dollars from her modelling.
Not only is Choupette a millionaire in her own right, as Lagerfeld’s named ’heir’ she is destined to inherit some of his many millions.
Depending upon how much is bequeathed to her, she could be poised to set a new record for the world’s wealthiest cat.
The record is currently held by a cat called Blackie, who inherited £7million from his British owner in 1988.
We have several beautiful white felines in our cattery at the moment who could give Choupette a run for her money when it comes to good looks, although the only ’cat walk’ they want is the freedom to roam around a large back garden.
Murphy, for example, is a fluffy white four-year-old who is a little shy when you first meet him. Once he gets to know you, though, he becomes much more confident and he enjoys being fussed over - which is just as well because part of his new regime will need to include regular brushing.
When he came to us he had quite a few clumps in his fur which needed to be cut out, and so he’s obviously not able (or interested in) grooming himself to the standard required for a fluffy white cat - even one that isn’t destined to be a top model.
Gonzo, another four-year-old white cat, has the same approach to personal grooming and so he, too, will need to be brushed regularly.
We don’t think either Murphy or Gonzo has a hearing problem, although it’s not uncommon for white cats to be deaf.
It’s difficult to test for deafness in a busy cattery environment.
In fact, it’s not particularly easy in a home environment because you may call your cat and he or she may simply choose to ignore you (cats being cats!).
Deafness is more prevalent in white cats with blue eyes, and given Murphy and Gonzo have yellow eyes they are very unlikely to have any hearing impairment.
Although summer sunshine still seems a long way off, if Murphy and Gonzo spend too much time in direct sun they will need to have special sunscreen applied to their ears to prevent sun burn, which is something pure white cats are prone to.
So, if you are able to give either, or both, of these handsome boys a life of pampering and love, albeit not on the same scale as Lagerfeld, please come and meet them. The Cattery is open every afternoon between 1pm and 4pm, except for Thursdays.
