The hugely popular and much missed former Grand National winner Many Clouds, owned by the Isle of Man’s Trevor Hemmings, was remembered at a glittering ceremony in London.

The late, great gelding, who spent his ’holidays’ with Mr Hemmings in the island, won the Racing Breaks Outstanding Chaser award at this year’s 36th annual Racehorse Owners Association Horseracing Awards at London’s InterContinental Hotel last night. (Thursday)

The awards are voted for every year by the 8,000-strong membership of the ROA.

It is the second honour in a matter of weeks involving the racehorse who was immensely popular with Manx punters because of the Isle of Man connection.

As reported previously, a film documenting the rise to prominence of Many Clouds won an award at the Equus Film Festival in New York.

The short film was directed by the 2015 Grand National hero’s former work-rider Nathan Horrocks.

Horrocks was honoured with the award for best international director at a ceremony at the Helen Mills Theatre for his feature titled Many Clouds: The People’s Horse.

At last night’s awards, dual Classic and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Enable and her owner, Khalid Abdullah, swept the boards.

The filly, who won both the Investec Oaks and the Irish Oaks as well as Ascot’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, was voted ROA Horse of the Year, Godolphin Outstanding Filly/Mare and Godolphin Outstanding Middle Distance Horse, while Mr Abdullah was chosen as ROA Owner of the Year.

Two Godolphin-owned horses, Harry Angel and Ribchester who won five Group 1s between them during the season, were named Godolphin Outstanding Sprinter and Godolphin Outstanding Miler respectively.

Ascot Gold Cup hero Big Orange, owned by Bill and Tim Gredley, was chosen as Godolphin Outstanding Stayer for the second year.

Dewhurst Stakes winner US Navy Flag, owned by Derrick Smith, Mrs John Magnier and Michael Tabor, was the Godolphin Outstanding Juvenile, while the award for the ARC Outstanding All-Weather Horse went to Sovereign Debt, owned by Lady O’Reilly, James Hames and Tommy Dorman.

Cheltenham was named ROA Gold Standard Large Racecourse of the Year, while the award for the Small Racecourse was shared by Bangor-on-Dee and Musselburgh.

ROA President Nicholas Cooper thanked Godolphin and Racing Breaks, the main sponsors of the Flat and National Hunt awards respectively. ARC and European Bloodstock News also supported the annual event.
